Half a dozen students from Options for Youth filled in for Cupid on Valentine's Day, giving out roses, handmade cards and sugar-free chocolates to seniors at Foremost Health Care.

The teenagers passed out a couple dozen small bags of chocolates to the seniors gathered in an activity center, listening to a visiting couple sing for them, said Veronica Angulo, the Options for Youth teacher who organized the event for the Hesperia assisted living center on Sultana Street. Then students stopped to chat.

"We sure do appreciate this," senior Jerry Johnson said.

"This makes me feel younger," added Louise Smith.

Sophomore Autumn Arnold said she thoroughly enjoyed preparing cards and favor-style bags of chocolates for the seniors. She also felt sad for those who had lost loved ones.

"I thought it was good to bring love and joy to them," said Brandy Saffold, another student at Options for Youth charter school.

The staff at Foremost was happy to have the event as well.

"I would like the seniors to feel the romance and love of Valentine's Day again," said Tammy Campos, activities directorwith Foremost.

Before leaving, the teenagers gathered 12 more roses and cards for seniors who couldn't make the gathering, Campos said.

They left feeling Cupid would be proud.
