Sandra Rings, owner of Salon Diva, this was named 2012 Hesperian of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce for her efforts in giving back to the community through food drives and other events.

Rings was born in Yonkers, NY and moved to California 31 years ago at 15. It took her a while to get used to California, mostly because she missed wearing winter clothes and good pizza.

She's always had a passion for makeup and fancy hair. Rings attended Richards Beauty College in Pomona when she was 16 through an ROP program and later furthered her career by attending barber college.

When Rings was in her 20s, her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. She passed away when Rings was 25. She came to Victorville the night of her mom's funeral to stay with an aunt for a few days. When she woke up and saw the mountains, she decided this is where she wanted to live and has been in the High Desert for 21 years this June.

Rings married her husband in 2005 and joined the Hesperia chamber in 2010, soon becoming an ambassador for the business organization.

Q: What do people not know about your job?

A: It's not as easy or glamorous as it looks. It is fun but it's not easy. Most people go to beauty school thinking it's all fun doing hair and makeup, but there's a lot more science, chemistry, biology and business you need to learn. I attended beauty school when I was 16 thinking I was going to get my hair done all day. Thinking anyone can cut hair with a pair of scissors. I was wrong! Training was intense!

Q: What is the best thing about your job?

A: Seeing how happy our clients are once their hair is done. They feel like a million dollars and it shows! That makes my heart happy! And I get to use my talent to help those who are unfortunate.

Q: Tell us about one thing you want to accomplish in life.

A: I would like to open a beauty college. I love teaching and sharing my experiences with others to help them learn and grow. Right now I'm starting an advance training class to help those who need more practice after they went to state board.

Q: Where would you like to be in 10 years?

A: I would like to be teaching in our beauty school and have made Salon Diva into a franchise!

Q: What makes you tick?

A: When I hear my husband laugh! My heart flutters when I hear him laugh and it makes me happy! He deserves to be happy and he deserves to laugh!

Q: What is the source of your values?

A: God of course. Our mother was very strict with us. We couldn't date or go to prom or anything.

While the cousins and siblings were sneaking out, I was sitting in my room. To this day they call me Sandra Dee and I'm proud of the clean lifestyle I've lived. I listened and it paid off!

Q: Who is someone who had a big influence on your life?

A: My grandpa on my dad's side and my husband. My grandpa was a smart business man and he truly loved us. I learned a lot from him. My husband is a loyal man and just by his actions towards me I have learned a lot from him and his love and support keeps me trying harder to do more and better!

Q: What is your favorite quotation?

A: "The New York Yankees won the World Series! Again!" Actually it's a Bible verse that caught my eye in 1994. Psalm 37:4, "Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." I asked Pastor Jack Hamilton decades ago what did that mean and he said peace. You will be at peace. I loved the verse and I love peace.

Q: Tell us about your belief system.

A: I truly believe in God and I know that no matter what happens to me good or bad He will see me through. My stress has disappeared!

Q: What motivates you?

A: My husband and my clients. I do what I can to make him proud. My clients are very valuable to me and the respect they have for me just helps me to offer more and do better.

Q: What is your secret to living a happy, satisfying life?

A: I trust in God, I enjoy what I do and I'm grateful for all I have and don't have.

Q: What is something you are particularly proud of?

A: My husband, and the success of the charity the Salon accomplishes!

Q: What book had a significant impact on you?

A: "The Power of Positive Thinking." I read that book in one day. Even made dinner while reading it. That was 1993. My life changed from that moment! No matter how dark life gets I focus on the light!

Q: What are five things you can't live without?

A: Makeup, toner for my face, hot curlers, hair color and New York pizza.

Q: What words of advice do you have for younger generations?

A: What you do today will determine your life tomorrow. Follow your dream while you are young. Don't be lazy!

Q: What is your passion?

A: Feeding and beautifying people.

Q: Which three people, living or from history, would you like to have at a dinner party, and why?

A: Jesus, so I can thank Him. My mother, who passed away when she was three years younger than I am now. I would like to tell her I missed her in the past 21 years. And Frank Sinatra so I can hear him sing "New York, New York" live at my dinner party!

Q: What's your favorite movie and why?

A: "Robin and the Seven Hoods" starring the Rat Pack. It's hilarious and the actors are very classy!

Q: Tell us about a special vacation.

A: My husband took me up to Copperopolis and we were having dinner with his family and when I picked up my napkin an engagement ring was on a fork sitting on a dark blue ceramic dish. The best moment in my life at that time!

Q: Tell us about your first car.

A: It was a 1978 Camaro with a 350 and air shocks.

Q: Tell us about the charities that are close to your heart and why.

A: Food charities. It makes me sad that people are hungry. We have an ongoing food drive at the Salon. I am currently serving on the board of the High Desert Violence program now known as Family Assistance and there is a great need there as well. I want to help.

Q: What's your favorite place to eat in Hesperia?

A: Valentino's Pizza. Their pizza, sandwiches and lasagna isn't New York but it sure is close! You can tell they care about their customers and they love to cook!

Q: How can readers reach you?

A: Our website at www.SalonDiva.org or (760) 948-8808.
