After four years, Summit Leadership Academy will have a new director once the current school year ends.

Staff members at the charter school were informed of the school board's decision at a meeting on March 9.

"Summit is running well. At this time, my board has informed me that they won't be renewing my contract," Dotson said Thursday. "I've got some parents who would like for me to come back."

"He's kind of like the heart at Summit and the kids love him," mother Michelle Leon said. According to Leon, parents have been told a variety of vague and conflicting reasons for Dotson's contract not being renewed.

"The board has a right to go in a different direction, if they choose," Dotson said.

Board members aren't saying what led to the decision to replace him.

"It is true that the director's contract is not being renewed," said SLAHD board member Barry Fox, a division chief with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, by email. "I have no further comments."

The Summit Leadership Academy Class of 2012 will graduate on May 23. Dotson will work at the school through July 1.

"We're still here, we're still working hard, negotiating contracts and doing everything that it takes to run a school," he said.
