Sultana High School's stage will be transformed into a dreamscape this week, when the school's drama club performs "Dream Girls" by Elmer Rice.
The play has the virtue of a large cast with lots of female roles — important for many high school drama productions — and its playwright is one that Sultana's drama teacher, Derin Grebel, has long enjoyed.
"Elmer Rice wrote 'The Adding Machine,' an existential play I have always liked," Grebel said, "as well as 'Street Scene' which won a Pulitzer Prize and was eventually turned into an opera.
"I know he is not in vogue right now, but he has a straightforward approach to his work that I appreciate. In one of the finals scenes of this play, he simply states his theme: 'Dreaming is easy and life is hard … In dreams, no matter how much you win, your gains are illusory … in life you win or lose, but you always have something to show for it, even if it's only a scar or a painful memory.' As a high school teacher, this play has a true meaning for my students. It has lead to some interesting discussions."
Grebel has yet to repeat a play in his time at Sultana High School.
"I have never done this play before and it has challenged me creatively," he said. "My production class, which designs all technical aspects of the play, has really loved the challenge of a multi-unit set with dream scenes."
The Sultana High School Drama Club will perform Elmer Rice's "Dream Girls" through Friday. Today through Thursday, the doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 6 p.m. On Friday, there will be a matinee performance with the doors opening at 2:30 p.m. and the performance at 3 p.m., and a second show with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the performance at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6 each.
