HESPERIA • Hesperia sheriff's deputies Friday are alerting the community a violent sexual predator has been released into their neighborhood.
Martin Kenneth Smith, 47, will be living at a home located in 16200 block of Chestnut Street, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's release.
In 1994, Smith was convicted in San Diego County of multiple counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child under the age of 14. He was sentenced to a 10-year prison sentence but was released after only five, officials said.
After violating the terms of his parole, Smith was later committed to Coalinga State Hospital in 2006. He was recently released from civil commitment without any supervision or electronic monitoring, officials said.
Smith is classified as a sexually violent predator by the California Department of Justice. That designation is reserved for less than 1 percent of the 123,821 registered sex offenders, sheriff's officials said.
Smith is a white man, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.
His residence and status are subject to full disclosure pursuant to current State Law.
Residents who have questions or concerns regarding sex offender laws and or conditions are encouraged to refer to those resources, or may contact Detective Mike New at the Hesperia station at (760) 947-1500.
