The under-construction Hesperia Cinema 12 movie theater may not be scheduled to open before Thanksgiving of this year, but families will still be able to catch movies in downtown Hesperia this summer.
The Hesperia Recreation and Park District is bringing back its Movies in the Park program for a sixth year.
"There's just something about sitting out on the grass and enjoying it with the family," said Don Webb, recreation supervisor for the district.
The program and the Hesperia Cinema 12 won't be in direct competition even when it opens, Webb said, as the park district is typically showing movies that were released at least six months ago.
"We think the event is going to grow and grow," Webb said. "When you provide family entertainment for free, it's hard not to go to it."
Movie attendees will want to bring their wallets, however, as the movies will feature more vendors than in previous years, including merchants selling ice cream, hot dogs, kettle corn, hamburgers and pizza.
The park district's Movies in the Park program begins June 9 and is held on the second, third and fourth Saturdays of every month at Hesperia Civic Plaza Park, 15833 Smoke Tree St. The films begin at dusk. For more information, call (760) 244-5488.
