More than 100 area faithful congregated outside Hesperia City Hall on Thursday, observing the National Day of Prayer.
Religious leaders from around the Victor Valley led the group in prayer in both English and Spanish, and members of the Hesperia High School Select Ensemble led the group in song.
"God specializes in the impossible," said Pastor David Penn, of the Hesperia Church of the Nazarene.
The community needs prayer now more than ever, according to Penn.
"We have people needing help who have never needed it. They were the ones who provided the help," he said. "The way that God can help us in Hesperia is ... by making us holy. ... God makes us righteous and pure and clean and transforms us."
The ceremony ended with "My Country Tis of Thee" performed on a solo trumpet.
The National Day of Prayer is observed annually on the first Thursday in May. President Harry S. Truman signed a bill creating the observance in 1952.
