HESPERIA Pier 1 Imports will be opening a store in the High Desert Gateway shopping center, at Main Street and Interstate 15, later this year.

The national home decor chain has had a store on Mariposa Road in Victorville since 1995. Hesperia officials believe that site will be closing when the new 10,090-square-foot Hesperia store opens its doors.

The new Pier 1 Imports store should open in September, according to Marie Buyer, assistant tenant coordinator for the Lewis Group, the Upland company that developed the shopping center.

The High Desert Gateway shopping center has been one of Hesperia's biggest economic success stories.

"It's been a huge success since first opening with the Super Target" in 2008, city spokeswoman Kelly Malloy said Thursday. "We look forward to the future success of this center and eventually High Desert Gateway II, which will mirror that project, north of Cataba (Road)."

New businesses continued to open at the center during the recession, including Ross Dress for Less and Golden Corral Buffet and Grill in 2010. Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Stores moved from Victorville to the shopping center in March of this year.

Pier 1 Imports isn't the only new business coming to Hesperia this year:

A new Blue Ribbon Stater Bros. will open on the site of the former Albertsons grocery store in Midtown Square Shopping Center, replacing the nearby Stater Bros. shopping center at Main Street and G Avenue;

The Walmart Supercenter at the intersection of Main Street and Escondido Avenue is expected to open this fall;

Hesperia's first movie theater, a 12-screen Cinema West theater featuring IMAX screens and restaurant service, is on track to open by Thanksgiving;

The old Bob's Big Boy restaurant on Main Street, across from the High Desert Gateway shopping center, is being converted to a Beef 'O' Brady restaurant.

"Hesperia has seen a lot of new businesses open over the last two years," Malloy said. "People are shopping in Hesperia with the intent of coming here."
