HESPERIA For those driving between Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Hesperia has long been synonymous with fast food. Now Chipotle Mexican Grill is betting it can lure travelers off for longer with a new restaurant.

The Denver-based restaurant chain has submitted plans to build a new location just north of In-N-Out Burger near the intersection of Main Street and Mariposa Road, adjacent to Interstate 15.

The company submitted construction plans to the city on June 15, applied for a building permit and hopes to begin construction before the end of August, according to Hesperia city officials. But the proposed restaurant has only begun working its way through Hesperia's approval process.

"Depending on the quality of the plan submitted, it could be quick or a little less quick," said Steve Lantsberger, the city's director of economic development.

The 2,385-square-foot restaurant is expected to employ 16 people, according to Lantsberger.

Hesperia's Main Street In-N-Out location is consistently one of the city's largest generators of sales tax revenue, and the proposed Chipotle which is being built on land currently owned by the hamburger chain is a great one, according to Lantsberger.

"Exposure-wise, it's right on the 15. ... You couldn't ask for a better location."

The Chipotle location would also be located within Hesperia's enterprise zone, making the company eligible for tax credits for hiring eligible employees or purchasing qualified machinery or parts.

"It always helps when you can reduce your tax liability," Lantsberger said.

Chipotle currently has two locations in the Victor Valley, both on Bear Valley Road: one in Victorville and one in Apple Valley. Representatives for the company did not respond to requests for comment.
