CAJON PASS A Hesperia man died driving off of Interstate 15 after he ran over his wife and fled the scene, San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said Monday.

Kenneth Amaya Jr., 34, got into an argument with his wife Saturday over a domestic issue along the side of the road near Tamarisk Avenue and Main Street in Hesperia, said Susan Rose, spokeswoman for the sheriff's Hesperia station.

Witnesses called 911 at 1:58 p.m. after they saw Amaya get into his gold 2003 GMC Yukon and run over his wife. Amaya had fled the scene by the time deputies arrived, Rose said. The wife was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, but the extent of her injury wasn't available.

Then at about 2:11 p.m., Amaya was driving at an undetermined high rate of speed on the I-15 when he lost control of his car about one mile north of State Route 138, according to California Highway Patrol officials.

He veered to the right and crashed into a metal guardrail, CHP spokesman Leon Lopez said. The car continued through the barrier and rolled down a steep embankment before the driver got ejected. He wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Amaya suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:30 p.m. by paramedics.

No one else was injured in the freeway accident, which is still under investigation by the CHP, Lopez said.
