HESPERIA • Nancy Herbold, the wife of long-time Hesperia nursery owner Cal Herbold, is fighting cancer. However, a lack of finances has hindered medical treatment, prompting the community to rally around the family and plan events to help offset the staggering costs.
Nancy Herbold, 85, was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer 18 months ago. She had regressed from stage 4 to nearly state 2, but her treatments ceased due to financial restraints, which has caused Herbold to take a take a turn for the worse.
"My family would never ask for help, but I felt like the community should know about my mother and her struggles," said Herbold's daughter, Robin Schwarz, who was visiting from Colorado.
"Cal is doing OK, but sometimes his hope begins to fail," Schwarz said. "He's being hit on all sides. The bigger stores and the economy has devastated his nursery, which has been around for some 37 years."
The family has maxed-out all their credit cards to cover medical expenses, and Schwarz said family members are hoping the community can give a little back after the couple has served the community for some four decades.
"My mom is doing fine mentally, but she looks bad physically," Schwarz said. "This type of cancer shows on the skin, and she has almost no appetite."
An avid animal lover, Nancy Herbold helped thousands of animals over the years and was a regular visitor to animal shelters and rescue facilities around the valley.
"She almost had a zoo with some 300 birds, horses, goats, beakless geese and legless birds," Schwarz said. "She even gave Siegfried and Roy two llamas that she nursed back to health."
Several events have been scheduled to help the family, including a Cash Mob at Cal Herbold's Nursery in Hesperia on Saturday. Alyssa Penman, owner of Rely Local, is asking the community to shop at the nursery, located at 9403 "E" Avenue, as part of the all-day mob event.
Applebee's Restaurant in Victorville will host a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Sunday from 8 to 10 a.m., with a portion of each $10 meal going toward Herbold.
The family has also planned a car-wash at the Stater Bros. on the corner of Main and Eighth Streets from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Donations can also be made at any Wells Fargo Branch under the "Nancy Herbold Donation" account.
