Goblins and sorcerers will invade Hesperia, as the much-anticipated fantasy "The Hobbit: An unexpected Journey" will be the first movie shown at the new Civic Plaza 12 theater, which opens for business on Dec. 14.
The 12-screen theater, which broke ground September 2011 next to Civic Park, will feature digital projection and sound, D-Box Motion Seating and two 60-foot wide screens, which are among the largest in California, according to Cinema West owner David Corkill.
"The 35-foot tall screens are incredible, and the reserved seating is the best," Corkill said. "You can order your tickets five minutes before 'The Hobbit' and know exactly where you'll be sitting — no need for waiting in long lines."
The theater is also planning a cafe that will serve beer and wine.
The Hesperia location will be the first Southern California theater for Petaluma-based Cinema West, which operates 11 other locations in Northern California and Idaho.
The new theater at 9711 Ninth Ave. is directly behind City Hall.
