A Hesperia High School graduate said learning to write during her days at the school helped drive her to publish her debut novel.

Anna Abner graduated from the school in 1995. Now, she's published "Spell of Summoning," the first volume in her budding "Dark Caster" science fiction and romance series.

"I'm so excited to share my story with High Desert readers because I learned to write fiction from the amazing teachers at Hesperia High School," Abner said.

In Spell of Summoning, character Holden Clark has no faith in his power. A necromancer, he communicates with the dead, but he has never embraced his gifts. Now, he has no choice. He must stop the dark caster attacking the mesmerizing Rebecca Powell, but accepting this mission means he'll be delving into dangerous magics he's never used before. Holden will risk everything to protect Rebecca, including his heart.

Abner grew up in Hesperia, where she first discovered her desire to become a writer.

"One of my first memories is dangling over the arm of our living room sofa telling myself a post-apocalyptic survival tale in which my mother and I were the last two people on earth," Abner said. "It was so fun, I never stopped telling stories. In high school, I faked being ill so I could stay home to work on a novel about a nanny who falls in love with her boss' bad boy nephew."

As she got older, Abner earned a college degree, got married to a man she'd met in Hesperia, and later gave birth to a daughter, all while continuing to write.

"It only got more fun," Abner said. "I wrote through my lunch breaks at work. I wrote on the treadmill at the gym. Eventually, I had dozens of short stories, novellas, and full-length novels piling up on thumb drives and in plastic tubs."

She said she's now ready to share her stories with the world, starting with Spell of Summoning.

Abner, whose husband is an enlisted U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., has lived on or near military bases in California and Utah. She currently lives in Jacksonville, N.C.

Spell of Summoning is available in ebook format at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
