For a pet lover like KAT Country DJ Jim "Jimmer" Dillman, losing his beloved beagle Boscoe two years ago was one of the worst experiences he's ever been through. Dillman says in the aftermath, he and his wife Judy decided they did not want to get another dog and have to endure the sadness of losing it one day.
Little did they know that in the not-so-distant future, a sweet little puppy they spotted on Facebook would become the mender of their broken hearts. Six months ago, the Dillmans welcomed the precious pooch into their home and named him Gizmo, a moniker that Dillman says fits him to a tee.
"My grandson, Caleb named him and said he looks like that cute little creature in Stephen Spielberg's movie, 'Gremlins,' " said Dillman, a native of Montgomery City, Mo. "He really does resemble it and just like his namesake, he's adorable."
Considering Gizmo's charming personality, Dillman says it's not surprising he's been successful at wrapping him and Judy around his little paw. But the couple doesn't mind being fools for love, Dillman says.
"He's the master of the house and we're just the guests," said Dillman, who has been a DJ at KATJ 100.7 FM since 1992. "But he's so incredibly cute it's hard not to let him have whatever he wants. I'll tell you what, for Gizmo, every day around here is like Christmas."
Although Dillman is a public figure, he says Gizmo has been content to stay out of the spotlight and go on quiet, daily walks with Judy. However, Gizmo is scheduled to make a public appearance with Dillman on May 10: they'll be the grand marshals of the Hesperia PetWalk at Civic Plaza Park.
Dillman says the event will be Gizmo's first big outing and he feels certain his magnificent mutt will be in his glory lapping up all the attention.
"Raising a dog is just like raising a kid," Dillmansaid. "Gizmo has to have his little clothes and all of his toys ... One day not that long ago, I walked in the house and he was lying on a cell phone with it next to his ear.
"I thought, 'I hope Judy did not buy him a cell phone.' He's pretty spoiled but that would definitely be over the top."
