Hello, Hesperia! A wonderful dinner was held last month to honor volunteers for the Hesperia Police Activities League "HPAL" Program. It was held at the Percy Bakker Center and catered by Valentino's of Hesperia. There were many people honored for their volunteer work and there was also a big surprise to Robert "Coach" Espinosa, Deputy Gerri Navarro, and Lt. Matt Schilling for all their dedicated work.

In the beginning, the program was started by Robert "Coach" Espinosa and Lt. Linzy Savage. It has grown to be a great program for our youth. Espinosa has been with the program since the beginning in 2009. He teaches, trains and inspires the youth. His tireless and selfless efforts have made a remarkable difference in the lives of many young people. Besides teaching the physical skills of boxing, he passes on life skills and emphasizes the importance of honesty, integrity, tenacity, personal responsibility and being accountable for one's choices.

Deputy Gerri Navarro she has been the director of operations for the program since 2012. She runs the day-to-day operations of the program, is at the gym working out with the youth, makes home visits and coordinates the activities of the program.

Lt. Matt Schilling also helped at the beginning of the program in 2009 when he was a sergeant. He was later promoted to lieutenant and transferred, but transferred back to Hesperia in the beginning of 2012 and has been involved with HPAL ever since.

Also, Hesperia Recreation and Park District helped provide resources for the program to be successful.

See you next month.

Love, Charlene
