Officials have issued an extreme heat advisory.

Temperatures this weekend are expected to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is warning the public to take steps to avoid heat-related illness.

"Some health conditions such as obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, poor circulation, sunburn and drug and alcohol use can make it harder for the body to stay cool in hot weather," warned Dr. Margaret Beed, Health Officer with the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health.

Beed warns residents not to leave infants, children or the elderly unattended in a parked car.

Residents should also drink plenty of fluids, not waiting until they feel thirsty, especially fruit juice or a sports drink to replace salts and minerals lost during heavy sweating. (Those on a low-sodium diet should check with their physician first.) Hot foods and heavy meals should also be avoided in favor of cold foods and frozen treats.

Residents should also wear lightweight loose-fitting clothing and wear a hat and use sunscreen as needed.

Beed also recommended residents stay indoors in an air-conditioned environment and avoid physical activity as much as possible during the hottest part of the day. When appropriate, windows should be opened to let fresh air to circulate. Use cold compresses, misting, showers and baths to keep cool as well.
