Hesperia high school students overwhelmingly voted in favor of Barack Obama as part of a statewide mock vote.

Local students participated in the October 30 MyVote California Student Mock Election, sponsored by Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, the California Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, and the National Student/Parent Mock Election.

Six hundred and fourteen schools participated statewide, with Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama received 73.52 percent of the votes for president, easily beating Republican Party candidate John McCain came in second with 20.86 percent of the votes.

It was a similar story in Hesperia.

The race was tightest at Sultana High School, where 1,757 votes were cast by students in all four grades, along with votes from teachers. Obama beat McCain by 8 percent of the vote, 853 to McCain's 718. Candidates from other parties received 8 percent of the vote.

"The freshman might not know enough; the seniors might not care enough," World History teacher Robert Hargis is quoted as saying in the Election Day issue of Turban Talk, the school newspaper. "I look askance at the voting patterns of the senior and freshman classes because they tend to be a little extreme, but considering how conservative our area is, Obama still did extremely well."

McCain fared even worst among Mojave High School students, coming in third behind independent candidate Ralph Nader. With 163 votes cast, Obama received 70 percent, Nader received 13 and McCain 12, behind Nader by only one vote. Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney received 5 percent of the vote.

Obama did the best with Canyon Ridge High School students. He received 75 percent of the 147 votes cast, with McCain trailing at 18 percent. McKinney received 3 percent of the vote and Nader and America's Independent Party candidate Alan Keyes tied with 1 percent of the vote.

"I've never in 22 years of teaching social studies had students so informed and interested in politics," said Karen Rittman, world history and social studies teacher, and Canyon Ridge's ASB advisor.

Hesperia High students did not participate in the mock vote.
