Coming off a solid third place finish in the CIF Finals at Mt. SAC, it seemed a top five finish at State might be wishful thinking for the Sultana girls varsity cross country team. But on Saturday, Nov. 29, the team lived up to its potential -- and more -- by taking third at the Division II State Cross Country Championships in Fresno.

Leading the way at Woodward Park was sophomore Shayna Robinson, who finished in 12th place with a time of 18 minutes, 16 seconds. Jane Higuchi, also a sophomore, took 23rd place with a time of 18:29. Hannah Munyan, just a freshman, took 33rd place in 18:41. The Bird sisters were led by senior Alaina Bird who came in 80th place with a time of 19:33. Younger sister Cassie, another stellar freshman, ran a 19:42 for 96th place. Freshman Emily Harrison also ran a 19:42, finishing in 98th place. Sophomore Kelly Carlucci ran a 20:35 for 139th place.

The week prior at CIF Finals, Vanessa Mendoza was part of the team and finished with a time of 20:02. Other team members were Tesla McOrmand and Karla Estudio.

The teams is coached by John Mahr, Pete Delegardelle and Ron Bonner.
