Sultana High School freshman Hannah Munyan set a school record when she the Surf City Half Marathon in Huntington Beach in 1 hour, 26 minutes, 47 seconds. She won the girls 17-and-under age group in race that attracted 18,000 runners on Sunday, Feb. 1.

Munyan beat the previous girls school record of 1:29:18, which was set by Danielle Varela in 2005.

Sultana boys Jesse Lopez and Bradley Minton ran 1:24:30 and 1:29:34, respectively.

First-ever half-marathoners Jane Higuchi and Shayna Robinson each ran 1:43:13.

Last year, Sultana High School's Kyle Gallagher ran a school record 2:44:13 full marathon in Carlsbad. After graduation, Gallagher began a two-year mission.

Win over Serrano guarantees league championship for Hesperia

Hesperia beat former league champ Serrano 61-49 to guarantee at least a share of the Mojave River League championship last Thursday night in Phelan.

The victory brought the Scorpion's league record to 6-0. The team could win the league championship outright if it beats Rim of the World at home.

Serrano was playing without its star, Jamaal Franklin, a 31-point-a-game phenom who is on suspension. Still, the Diamonbacks' Timmell Thomas made 28 points.

Once again, A.J. Mathis led the Scorpions with a solid 20-point, nine-rebound game.

Chris Sheldon hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Storm Venegas has 12 points.

Patriots still perfect in league

Last Friday's 59-34 win over Antelope Valley Christian brought Hesperia Christian's Agape League record to a perfect 8-0. A win over Apple Valley Christian on Tuesday, Feb. 10 would mean an outright league championship for the Patriots.

Seth Thomas had a phenomenal 20-point, 20-rebound game against Antelope Valley.

Clutch plays by Sergio Lugo made the difference at the Hesperia Scorpions beat the Victor Valley Jackrabbits last Wednesday night, 59-56.

Rim beats Sultana 65-55

On Tuesday, Feb. 3, despite Anthony Salgado's stellar 27 points and 15 rebounds, the Sultana boys basketball team couldn't get past Rim of the World. The final score was Rim 65, Sultana 55.

Hesperia Christian's Sierra Rick had a stellar double-double last Friday against Lancaster - 16 points and 17 rebounds - as the Patriots smashed Antelope Valley Christian 58-16.

The Patriots, currently 8-0, could claim the league championship outright on Tuesday.

Austin Burke and Christian Blasius each had two goals to lead the Sultans to victory over Rim of the World on Tuesday, Feb. 3. The Final score was Sultana 6, Rim 0.

John Gremer had one goal and two assists; Luis Rosas also had one goal and one assist.

Sultana wins tournament

Sultana High wrestlers won the 42nd Dick Comply Invitational at Victor Valley College on Saturday, Jan. 30.

Heavyweight wrestler Manny Mazariegos of Sultana and 112-pounder Brian Pinto from Hesperia High were named MVPs.

Sultana set a tournament record with 328 points while Hesperia took second with 248-1/2.
