A skateboarder on his way to school is dead, after a traffic collision on Monday.

Dusty Martin, 17, was skateboarding his way to a bus stop where he would catch the bus to Riverside Preparatory School in Oro Grande, when he was struck and hit by a motor vehicle Monday morning, shortly after 5 a.m. near the intersection of Cottonwood Avenue and Poplar Street, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

According to the department, Kenneth Stotelmyre, 24, was driving northbound on Cottonwood behind a slower-moving vehicle, and moved into the southbound lane to pass the other motorist. He reportedly struck Martin in the southbound lane.

Stotelmyre allegedly fled the scene, returning a short time later with his father.

Martin sustained major head, body and leg injuries, and was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Stotelmyre was arrested at the scene for felony hit and run, and transported to Victor Valley Jail. The sheriff's department does not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.
