For the second time in two weeks, a Victor Valley man has shot his son then himself.
A Hesperia man is in critical condition after crashing into a guard rail near Silverwood Lake, then shooting his 4-year-old son and himself, San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said.
Motorists found what appeared to be a crashed car near Silverwood Lake on Monday night at 6:11 p.m., according to a sheriff's news release. California Highway Patrol officers arrived and found a man and the boy inside suffering from gunshot wounds.
Sheriff's detectives determined that Jesus Roman Fuentes, Jr., 34, of Hesperia shot the boy then himself. The boy was identified by the sheriff's department as Jesus Gabriel Fuentes.
The boy, also from Hesperia, died at Mountain Community Hospital in Lake Arrowhead. Jesus Fuentes is in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Miller said.
Detectives believe Jesus Roman Fuentes was divorced from the boy's mother. He had taken the boy for a visit and failed to return him to his mother at the specified time of 4:30 p.m., sheriff's department spokesman Jodi Miller said.
Jesus Roman Fuentes lived with his parents in Hesperia. They later found a suicide note in their home, which they turned over to deputies, Miller said.
Miller did not have details about what else the note contained. Officers found a gun inside the silver Honda that Fuentes drove and believe that no one else was involved. Detectives hope to talk with Jesus Roman Fuentes once he regains consciousness, Miller said.
The killing comes little more than a week after a Pinon Hills man, Stephen Garcia, 25, shot and killed his infant son, Wyatt, and then himself.
