Hesperians will again have free summertime entertainment available, beginning Saturday, when Movies in the Park on Saturday.

The program is about "providing a cheap, free night out for the community," said the Hesperia Recreation and Park District's Brandon McAnulty.

The films will be shown on the second, third and fourth Saturdays of the months of June, July and August.

This is the fifth year of the program and the third that it takes place at Hesperia Civic Plaza Park, behind the library and city hall. The films are shown on an inflatable 18 by 24 foot screen, weather allowing. (A smaller, less wind-susceptible screen is available for windy Hesperia nights.)

"It seems like it's increasing in popularity every year," said McAnulty.

Last year, the films attracted between 300 and 500 people, he said.

"We actually sprung for the larger licenses" to allow the district to exhibit the film to even larger audiences.

Although the district shows the movies for free, moviegoers who bring their wallets can purchase popcorn and cotton candy from the concession stand or juice from Juice It Up, a sponsor of this year's movies.

This year's line-up includes:

June 11: How to Train Your Dragon (PG)
June 18: RV (PG)
June 25: Despicable Me (PG)
July 9: How to Eat Fried Worms (PG)
July 16: Megamind (PG)
July 23: The Karate Kid (PG) (2010 version)
Aug. 13: Tangled (PG)
Aug. 20: Toy Story 3 (G)
Aug. 27: To be determined

There will be a martial arts exhibition by participants in the park district's martial arts programs before the "Karate Kid" performance.

The last film of the year will be determined by a poll on the district's Facebook page (Facebook.com/HesperiaParks). The four choices are "Planet 51," "Secretariat," "Shrek Forever After" and "Wall-E."

The movies begin at dusk each night. Call (760) 244-5488 for more information, including notices of cancellation due to bad weather.
