Some of Sultana High's greatest volleyball players faced off against their modern day counterparts in the school's first-ever alumni volleyball game Thursday night.

"It was awesome," said former Daily Press Player of the Year Shannon Meyer Humphrey. "I was so excited to play."

The alumni squad, which included Hesperia High school volleyball coaches Cindy McGraa and Melanie Feenstra, faced off against this year's varsity squad.

Youth won out over experience, but not by much: The alumni squad took the first two games, and the varsity took the last three.

"Experience helped out a lot," said Humphrey, who has recently opened a new gym in Hesperia. "I didn't feel like I had any problem."

Many on the alumni squad had the advantage of playing together previously.

"I played with all of them for one point in time, except for the oldest ones," Humphrey said. "But this is the first time we've all been together since high school."
