VICTORVILLE — A Hesperia man who was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, aggravated mayhem and the torture of a 6-month-old child on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to the 12 counts of abuse brought against him on Friday.
Christain Ricardo Lopez, 23, was arraigned on Friday afternoon and is in custody at the High Desert Detention Center. His bail was originally set at $1 million, but it was increased to $2 million on Friday.
A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department press release said the 6-month-old “endured abuse for a significant period of time, resulting in numerous fractures in various stages of healing.”
Lopez was one of two suspects arrested in the case, deputies said. The child’s mother, Maria Estrada, 21, was also arrested Tuesday but has not been arraigned. Detectives said they believe Estrada was aware of the abuse but did nothing.
Lopez’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 2.
