  • VICTORVILLE — A prison facility within the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Victorville was placed on lockdown after two inmates were found dead Saturday night.
Officials said foul play is suspected, and that the facility — which houses approximately 1,300 prisoners — will remain on lockdown while the investigation proceeds.
Prison spokesman James Engleman said Sunday in a printed statement that the inmates died late Saturday and that the FBI is investigating their deaths as homicides.
    No prison workers were harmed.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said she could not comment further.
Complex Warden Richard B. Ives said during Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting in Victorville that there are four facilities at the federal correctional complex. It is unclear at which prison the incident occurred.
According to Ives, the complex holds about 4,700 inmates in total, split between one lower-level facility, two medium-level facilities and one facility that houses only women.
The complex contains inmates from all over the United States and the names of the deceased inmates will not be released until their families can be notified.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Ives explained that some of the inmates are documented gang members, including some from the Aryan Brotherhood, although there is no confirmation that gang violence played a role in the inmates’ deaths. Ives also said that there had not been a successful escape attempt as of Tuesday, and that the prison facilities were surrounded by electrical fencing with enough voltage to cause death if touched.
Prison officials said no further information could be released over the weekend. Attempts to contact the sheriff’s Victorville Station about the incident were unsuccessful as of Sunday night.
