  • An algae bloom in Silverwood Lake is not of concern to local water consumers because High Desert drinking water comes from groundwater wells, local water officials say.
Water drawn from the lake is used by Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to supply customers in parts of San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties, according to media reports.
The algae bloom is affecting drinking water in the areas served by MWD but is being treated, media reports say. The resulting unusual smell and taste do not present a health hazard, district officials told reporters, but are expected to last about two weeks.
