  • HESPERIA — San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials said on Wednesday that suicide was cause of death after a man was found dead Sunday on Highway 138 between Summit Valley Road and Highway 173.
Philip Smyth, 50, was found dead in his vehicle on Sunday morning after the California Highway Patrol responded to a call of a traffic collision on Highway 138 at around 5 a.m.
Upon arrival, CHP found no collision, but a body was found in a vehicle. CHP officials contacted Sheriff’s deputies. The Sheriff’s Department began an investigation and shut down eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 138 for eight hours on Sunday.
The incident was investigated as a possible homicide, but officials ruled it a suicide after an autopsy was conducted.
