A steady stream of customers were already filing in and out of the new Family Dollar store as city and regional officials cut the ribbon on the store Thursday.
“Thanks for shopping with us, have a nice day,” said Mayor Pro Tem Eric Schmidt as a lady with her shopping cart wove her way out to her car. “We’re excited to welcome our second Family Dollar to Hesperia and we’re looking forward to the official grand opening this Saturday.”
Schmidt said the Family Dollar store now shares the new 15,000-square-foot building with Aaron’s lease-to-own, which opened in June. The $1.8 million development project put 40 people to work during construction.
Representatives from the offices of Rep. Paul Cook, Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, 1st District Supervisor Robert Lovingood and state Sen. Steve Knight were also on hand to make presentations at the store located on the corner of Main Street and Hickory Avenue.
With a spring in her step and smile on her face, Customer Service Associate Melody Armstead greeted shoppers and Hesperia Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors as they explored the new store.
“I was introduced to Family Dollar as a customer when I visited my sister in Las Vegas, then I started shopping at the store near I Avenue in Hesperia,” said Armstead, who was hired in June. “I was drawn to the store by the customer service, friendliness and accommodating prices. And now, I’m part of a great family.”
Like Armstead, Store Manager Sean Sullivan said he was drawn to Family Dollar by the store’s focus on customer service and career opportunities.
“We’re a compelling place to work, and we try to pull everyone together as a team,” said Sullivan, who lives in Newberry Springs and has been with the retailer for two years. “We are in a great part of town and we’re the perfect one-stop shop where people don’t have to wait in long lines.”
Richard Wadley, area operations manager for Family Dollar, said he wants to inform and educate those new to the store about its seasonal offerings, full line of brand merchandise, grocery and household items and large selection of apparel.
“We opened our first Hesperia store about a year ago and that one is doing very well,” Wadley said. “With this new store we’re able to service our customers on the east side of the city.”
