HESPERIA — Three people, including the stepson of Hesperia’s mayor, were arrested Friday afternoon after firearms and narcotics were seized from a home in the 8400 block of 5th Avenue around 3:30 p.m., law enforcements authorities said.
The home is a rental property owned by Hesperia Mayor Thurston “Smitty” Smith that was being rented out to Smith’s stepson, Francis Hansen, 30.
“Yes, it is our house and my stepson was renting the home,” said Smith on Monday. “My wife, Margaret, and I are working with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department to resolve any issues.”
Two women, identified by deputies as Hesperia residents Susan Stevens, 37, and Melissa Magana, 27, also were arrested Friday. Both women had the rental property on 5th Avenue listed as their address, according to county arrest logs.
Smith, who said he rented the home to Hansen about seven years ago, said he was unaware of anyone else living in the home.
“He (Hansen) goes to court on Tuesday, so we will know more about the charges,” Smith said. “My son is 30 years old, he’s a grown man. We had no idea what was going on over there. But I will tell you this — it won’t happen again.”
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said on Friday that deputies were conducting surveillance just over one mile away in the area of 5th Avenue and Main Street before the property was seized and the arrests were made.
Authorities said the surveillance was part of a larger investigation but had no more information to release. Calls requesting comment on Monday were not immediately returned.
Hansen is being held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto, according to booking records. Magana and Stevens are being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Each is being held on $50,000 bail on suspicion of possession of narcotics while armed. They are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon at the Victorville courthouse.
