  • HESPERIA — A pair of suspected gang members pleaded not guilty to felony charges Tuesday after they allegedly shot at a parked vehicle in a driveway on 8th Avenue while a family was asleep inside the home, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Hubbard said.
Talib Venegas, 18, and Luis Servin, 25, both of Hesperia, were arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm and criminal street gang activity. Servin was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, Hubbard said.
Hubbard said deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 8th Avenue and Main Street around 1 a.m. Sunday. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies located a vehicle in the driveway of a home in the 9400 block of 8th Avenue that had been hit by gunfire. He said no one was in the vehicle and no one was injured.
“The car was in the driveway when the shots were fired,” Hubbard said. “The family was inside, sleeping when they heard it. They were the people who called the incident in.”
According to Hubbard, deputies began conducting an area check before they heard more gunshots in the area of 7th Avenue and Walnut Street. As they searched for the vehicle, deputies were flagged down by a citizen who gave them a vehicle description.
“Thankfully one of the deputies was able to locate the vehicle and conduct a traffic stop in the area of 3rd Avenue and Walnut Street,” Hubbard said.
When deputies stopped the black SUV, they discovered a gun on the ground just outside the vehicle, Hubbard said. Upon further investigation, deputies also found ammunition inside and outside the vehicle. The Hesperia Sheriff’s Station gang team was called out to help with the incident and identified Venegas as a known gang member. Servin was also believed to be a gang member.
Hubbard said deputies also discovered Servin, who was driving the vehicle, was under the influence of alcohol.
They were detained and transported to the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto. Both suspects remain at the jail on $150,000 bail each.
Hubbard said deputies also obtained two search warrants for the suspects’ Hesperia homes. Hubbard said deputies recovered ammunition at Servin’s house on Spruce Street.
A follow-up investigation is being conducted by the Hesperia gang team. Anyone with information regarding the incident or the suspects is urged to call Detective Stokes at the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station at 760- 947-1500.
