  • HESPERIA — The Percy Bakker Center sits just south of Main Street at 9333 E Ave.
Home to the Hesperia Recreation and Park District’s Senior Center, this one-time restaurant-turned-community- center is a unique building all in itself.
The facility is split into two large rooms, the North Room and the South Room. Each of the large banquet- style rooms can be rented for special occasions, such as wedding receptions, quinceaneras, anniversaries, reunions and meetings. Each room has a self-contained bar, a dance floor and steam tables/buffet area.
The North Room also has a small stage and can accommodate up to 230 people for an event, whereas the South Room has a capacity of 130 people for banquet-style seating. Rental prices start as low as $55 an hour.
A recent renovation project modernized the North Room with a lighter, more neutral-colored paint scheme, new flooring and installation of a synthetic wood dance floor. Additional floor space also was created during the renovation.
Individuals and organizations interested in viewing the facility can do so from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information regarding this, and any of the district’s rental facilities, can be found by going to HesperiaParks.com or calling 760-244-5488.
The Percy Bakker Center hosts a senior nutrition program that serves lunch from 11:15 a.m. to about 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Meals cost $3 for seniors 60 and older, and $7 for those 59 and younger.
The facility also hosts some of the park district’s contract classes.
Senior Fitness & Fun is a workout for men and women that increases strength and endurance while relieving stress in a friendly social atmosphere. The class includes low-impact exercises, step, strength training and flexibility with equipment provided.
The other class held in the center is Line Dancing. This class, geared for line dancers of all levels, learns a new dance every week.
Other activities taking place at the senior center include bunco, pinochle and bridge games.
There is also an activity room that includes two pool tables and a foosball table.
The Percy Bakker Center hosts monthly meetings for the Garden Club and the Desert Winds Quilt Guild.
For more information about days and times for the classes or activities, call 760-244-5488 or go to HesperiaParks.com.
