HESPERIA — A campus assistant at Ranchero Middle School was charged Monday with eight counts of felony sex crimes, court records show.
San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said Adrian Toriz, 28, of Hesperia, was arrested Friday after detectives from the Crimes Against Children Division began investigating allegations that a Hesperia School District employee was involved in an intimate relationship with a 15-year-old girl.
Sheriff’s officials said detectives obtained evidence suggesting Toriz was committing lewd acts with the victim for at least one year, beginning when she was 14.
The Hesperia Unified School District was made aware of the allegations and cooperated with the investigation. The district released a statement to advise parents of the arrest on Friday, though they did not release Toriz’s name at the time. Toriz was identified by the Sheriff’s Department on Monday.
“This news is deeply concerning and we are cooperating fully with law enforcement as this matter is investigated,” David McLaughlin, Hesperia Unified School District superintendent said in a written statement obtained by the Daily Press. “He has been placed on paid leave and he is prohibited from returning to school grounds pending the outcome of the investigation.”
Toriz was employed as a campus assistant at Ranchero Middle School, according to the district. The Daily Press also reported on Sunday that Toriz was a walk-on coach at Sultana High School.
Toriz is being held at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto on $750,000 bail.
As of Monday afternoon, court records did not show the next court date for Toriz.
