  • PHELAN — Serrano forced three turnovers and Geordan King scored three rushing touchdowns to lift the Diamondbacks past Paraclete 21-10 on Friday night.
Serrano scored two of its TDs following fumble recoveries.
“Turnovers won us the game,” Serrano head coach Ray Maholchic said. “They turned the ball over. I felt our kids hit hard tonight and forced some turnovers. We were flying to the ball. I thought we were out-physicalled on both fronts. They got some big boys. That’s a good team.”
Both teams were sloppy at times.
“We made some mistakes that were uncharacteristic of us, but it’s a great teaching tool,” Maholchic said. “It’s nice to have a win to use as a teaching tool, pay attention a little more.”
The game remained scoreless until about 5 minutes to play in the first half. Paraclete fumbled inside its own 10-yard line, and Serrano recovered.
King ran the ball into the end zone on the next play from 5 yards out. He finished with 104 rushing yards on 15 carries.
“I thought that was a turning point,” Maholchic said.
After Paraclete punted on the next drive, Serrano got the ball at its own 11-yard line with 3 minutes to play. The D’backs started their longest scoring drive of the night.
Serrano quarterback Austin Williams found Tanner Cornell for a 39-yard pass, and King had a 23-yard run before King capped the nine-play drive with a 4-yard run to give Serrano a 14-0 edge going into halftime.
On the first drive of the second half, Paraclete’s Melquise Stovall finished an 80-yard drive when he ran it from 2 yards out to make it 14-7. Stovall, who ran for 2,246 yards last year, only had 85 yards on the ground for the game.
The Spirits drove into the red zone on the first drive of the fourth quarter, but Serrano held them to a field goal.
With 4:23 to play, Paraclete got the ball following a Serrano punt. On the first play of the drive, the Sprits’ Ethan Clark fumbled and the D’backs recovered.
King carried the ball on the next four plays and capped the drive when he punched it in from 1 yard out to give Serrano a 21-10 lead with 2:54 to play.
