BARSTOW — The turning point in Barstow’s season-opening 40-6 victory over Miller was the coin toss.
The Aztecs won and elected to receive. Dion Brown returned the opening kickoff 47 yards to Miller’s 43-yard line. After a 15-yard penalty on Barstow, Brandon Pierce ran for eight of his game-high 113 yards, and Brown ran 50 yards for a touchdown on the next play.
Miller went four plays and turned the ball over at the Barstow 35. The Aztecs then moved 65 yards in 10 plays to extend their lead to 14-0. Quarterback Jacob Gatti scored on a 1-yard keeper.
Miller scored its only points when quarterback Malik Flowers found Dashawn Faison open up the middle for an 80-yard touchdown pass.
On the first play of the second quarter, Brown scored his second touchdown on a 15-yard run.
Brown added another touchdown on a 7-yard run with 3:16 left in the half to give Barstow a 27-6 lead.
The Aztecs then recovered an onside kick, and Jordon Londo scored on a 13-yard run to take a 34-6 lead into halftime.
“A tip of my hat to the Barstow squad,” Miller head coach Justin Nast said. “We scheduled this opponent because of their offensive scheme, and they didn’t disappoint. I was proud of our defensive adjustment in the second half.”
Brown contributed 101 yards rushing to go along with his three touchdowns on 15 carries.
Barstow out-gained Miller 332 to 128 total offense.
“I was happy to get this first game behind us and shake all of the jitters we had before the opening whistle. We came up with a win and I’m happy about that,” Barstow Head Coach Ray Silva said.
Barstow’s final score came 50 seconds into the fourth quarter on a fourth-and-goal from the 10-yard line. Gatti faked a handoff and rolled to his left and found brother George Gatti open for a touchdown.
