    • email print
  • It’s been a family tradition in Hesperia since 1948 and this year will see that tradition stay alive as Hesperia Days rolls into town on Sept. 20 and 21.
The weekend will begin, as it does nearly every year, with the annual 5K Run, Walk & Skate at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The starting point is at Percy Bakker Center, 9333 E Ave.
Immediately following the 5K is the Kiwanis Hesperia Days Parade with the route along Main Street from I Avenue to E Avenue. Actor Robert Pine, best known for his role as Sgt. Joe Getraer on the long-running NBC series, “CHiPs,” will serve as Grand Marshall for the parade once again. Pine was the Grand Marshall in the early 2000s.
The theme of this year’s parade is, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle... Re-love Hesperia.” Hundreds of local residents typically turn out for the parade. Those who want information on entering the parade should call 760-956-2361 or visit the Hesperia Recreation and Park District’s Lime Street Park office at 16292 Lime St. or Shear Realty at 14411 Main St.
After the parade, the festivities move to Hesperia Lake Park from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. for vendor booths, a kid’s fun zone  and much more. Several musical acts will be featured as part of the American Music Festival, entertaining event-goers throughout the day from noon to 7 p.m.
A fireworks display is planned for 7:30 p.m.
The fun continues on Sept. 21 beginning with the Wranglers Championship Gymkhana from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hesperia Lake Park. The vendor booths, kid’s fun zone and more will also still be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the American Music Festival will provide the soundtrack from noon to 6 p.m.
Another favorite every year at Hesperia Days will return this year with the Great Duck Race planned to begin at 3 p.m., also at Hesperia Lake Park. The race is presented by Victor Valley Community Services Council and proceeds support free programs for High Desert seniors in need.
Ducks will go into the stream and head toward the finish line. The first to cross the finish line will win $1,000. Ten lucky ducks can win $25 for resting in designated places along the way. The last duck will win $250. Call 760-243-9646 for information on the race.
Hesperia Lake Park is at 7500 Arrowhead Lake Road. For more information on any of the Hesperia Days activities, visit www.hesperiaparks.com or call 760-244-5488.
