HESPERIA — Thousands of beer lovers are expected to attend the 35th Annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver where a High Desert brewery will compete with other brewmasters as it tries to win the hearts and taste buds of the crowd.

Joshua Waters, co-owner of Desert Barn Brewery, said his brewery is proud to be submitting five beers as it competes with over 4,700 breweries hoping to come home with a gold, silver or bronze medal for excellence in 92 beer-style categories in October.

“In addition to the being there and being part of the event, we were just notified that Desert Barn has been hand-selected to be one of 24 breweries to be showcased in the event,” Waters said. “The festival is the largest festival in the country and draws over 60,000 people over the course of three days.”

Waters said the news of being selected caught him and his crew off guard, but they are excited to be honored, “especially since there are only two breweries in California." He added that Desert Barn and a brewery in San Francisco will represent the Golden State in the showcase, where the remaining 22 breweries are from Colorado and further east.

During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to sample some 3,800 beers from more than 800 breweries, according to the festival’s website.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Josh and Sarah for their home-grown business, which has flourished in Hesperia and is popular with so many people,” Hesperia Mayor Bill Holland told the Daily Press. “They pulled themselves up by their own bootstraps and worked like fiends to make the brewery so successful.”

Holland said the city is considering recognizing Desert Barn with a proclamation as the brewery will represent the city and residents of Hesperia.

The Waters’ brewery started in the small barn at the couple’s home in Apple Valley in 2004. The couple’s passion for for fine beer gave birth to the Desert Barn Brewery, where visitors enjoy a variety of craft brews. The brewery is popular for its food, specials and for including various flavors in their beer such as coffee, toffee, honey, chocolate, jalapeno and cactus.

The three-day Great American Beer Festival is scheduled to begin Oct. 6. For more information on the festival, visit www.greatamericanbeerfestival.com.

Desert Barn Brewery’s main tasting room is open to all ages and in addition to the beer offers sodas to those who want a non-alcoholic refreshment.
