Letters to the Editor

Board plays same hand

Way back in August 2007, I wrote about the Hesperia Unified School District board's decision to terminate then Superintendent Hank Richardson, at a cost of $331,050 to the city taxpayers. In 2007, Hardy Black, Ella “Lee” Rodgers and Robert Kirk were the board members responsible, electing to pay Mr. Richardson what amounted to $494,575 for a single year’s work, while paying $145,325 for his replacement, Mark McKinney.

It’s Déjà vu all over again, with the HUSD board’s decision to terminate Mark McKinney at the Dec. 18 board meeting, with 18 months left on his contract. Mr. McKinney will be paid out for 30 months for not doing the job that he was hired to do. And, who were the school board members who made the decision to bill Hesperia taxpayers for the remainder of Mr. McKinney’s contract? Hardy Black, Ella “Lee” Rodgers and Cody Gregg.

These decisions to enrich former HUSD superintendents amount to stealing from Hesperia taxpayers. It’s amazing that Hardy Black was involved in both terminations. Ella “Lee” Rodgers, after taking a sabbatical, was put back onto the board by Hesperia voters, only to terminate Superintendent McKinney, who was hired to replace Superintendent Richardson, who she voted to fire. Now the talk of recall petitions, again, it’s Déjà vu all over again.
