Mitzelfelt gives Hesperia sheriff's station $20,000 for youth sports programs

STAFF WRITER

Athletic programs for the at-risk teens in Hesperia got a helping hand from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt presented a pair of checks to the Hesperia station of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department at Tuesday meeting of the Hesperia City Council.

"My goal is to bring new after school programs to every city in the valley," Mitzelfelt told the council.

The two $10,000 checks benefit the department's Police Activities League and Cops and Jocks program.

The Police Activities League is an athletic program targeting teens who are in danger of involved in gangs or drugs, and league includes a boxing program and off-road activities.

The Cops and Jocks program involves members of the Hesperia station in local school sporting events, and provides scholarships and other financial support for school sports programs.

The next meeting of the Hesperia City Council will be held on Tuesday, January 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Hesperia City Hall,
