61st annual Hesperia Days held next weekend
Gymkhana, 5k run/walk/skate, parade among highlights
Hesperians will be riding, walking, running and skating -- as well as eating, drinking and dancing -- once again next weekend at the annual Hesperia Days celebration.
Sponsored by the Hesperia Recreation and Park District, the city of Hesperia, the Kiwanis Club of Hesperia, the Hesperia Wranglers and the Hesperia Equestrian Council, Hesperia Days is a three-day celebration happening across Hesperia.
On Friday, September 18, the Val Shearer Equestrian Center at Lime Street Park will play host to the Wranglers Championship Gymkhana.
On Saturday, the day begins with a five-kilometer run, walk and skate, beginning at the Percy Bakker Community Center on E Avenue. An hour later, the Kiwanis Hesperia Days Parade will begin at Timberlane Avenue and wind its way down Main Street to E Avenue.
The festivities move over to Hesperia Lake Park at 11, featuring vendors' booths, a kid's zone and more.
"We redid the park, so it's looking all nice," Hesperia Recreation and Park District Supervisor Steve Hamm said Thursday.
The American Music Festival begins performances at the park starting at noon. Fireworks cap off the day at 7:30 p.m.
"There will probably be a dunk tank this year. ... We'll still have the pony rides, the bungee trampoline. The climbing wall will still be there," said Hamm. "In the kid's area, there's the carnival-style kids games."
On Sunday at 9 a.m., the park will be the site of the Glenn Tatge Trail Ride. Vendors' booths, the kid's fun zone and the American Music Festival get underway again at 11 a.m., with events wrapping up at 6 p.m.
There is free parking and admission at Hesperia Lake Park during Hesperia Days, but some events will charge a fee. For more information, call 244-5488 or visit HesperiaParks.com
