Oak Hills sports fans spell 'support' B-I-N-G-O

STAFF WRITER

Forget $100 a plate political fundraisers: At Oak Hills High School, the big ticket ways to raise money for sporting events comes with a bingo card instead.

This school year, the school has been holding fundraisers at Community Bingo Hall on Hesperia Road in Victorville.

"We've had three of them," said head boys track and field coach Robert Metzger. "We've had two for football and we split one between track and field and one for boy's soccer."

The school has to sell 60 tickets and can make more than $2,000 as a result.

"We usually have, between us and [regular bingo players], you get a couple hundred of people there," Metzger said. "The people that go are having a great time."

The tickets aren't cheap -- they're $40 each, for 12 games -- but the prize money is enough to pay for a family's night out, should one of them win.

"Six games pay $175 and the others pay $250."

Metzger previously has participated in the bingo fundraisers when he was a coach at Hesperia High School.

"This is my third or fourth year doing it with them now," he said. "It's been a blessing, I'll tell you that much."
