Christmas came early to Hesperia, as community and city leaders toured the holiday-decorated Pier 1 Imports store at the High Desert Gateway Shopping Center on west Main Street.

“It’s a great day in Hesperia,” said Mayor Russ Blewett, as he greeted the early morning crowd at Wednesday’s grand opening. “We’re building this city one business at a time, and we’re glad to add Pier 1 Imports to the Hesperia family.”

After a humorous ribbon cutting ceremony with a pair of dull scissors, the group was awed by the store’s dazzling appearance as store manager Kim Tinkham opened the store’s double doors.

“I think the great lighting makes everything shine brighter, and the fun Christmas glitter-and-glam gives people that wow factor,” said Jennifer Cruz, a friendly sales associate who greeted guests as they entered.

The 10,000-square-foot building is one of 30 newly designed stores that offer more open space for product display, as well as strategic lighting throughout the store.

“People know that most of our products are handmade and shoppers really appreciate the detail that goes into that,” Cruz said. “Every piece is unique and that’s one thing that people love about our store.”

As Tinkham and store management spoke with guests, Neil Haughton of Hesperia was busy inspecting an assortment of walking canes.

“The Victorville store was so small and cramped, but this is fantastic,” said Haughton, as several ornamental giraffes stood next to him. “I think the store will do very well here.”

The Hesperia store, which had a soft-opening on Oct. 29, is expected to generate approximately $40,000 in property and sales tax each year, and is already in the process of hiring more employees, Blewett said.

The Victorville store, located on Mariposa Road, closed its doors on Oct. 6.

The Texas-based retailer specializes in imported home decor and furnishings, decorative accessories, as well as seasonal decor.

“I think we have a winner here,” Councilman Thurston “Smitty” Smith said. “A big brand new winner.”
