Finding ways to live a healthier lifestyle continues to be a hot topic among Americans and their families. Hoping to offer a little help on that front, Ranchero Middle School in Hesperia will hold its second annual Healthy Habits Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 13.
According to Claudia Hnasko, family research specialist at Ranchero Middle School, the event is set to take place on Ranchero's field and is open to the school's students and their parents.
She says it will feature everything from interactive exhibits to educational games and promises to be a fun and educational day for everyone.
“We started our event to help get our students and their parents motivated to change their lifestyles and work on improving their bodies and minds,” said Hnasko. “We had a lot of community organizations and businesses participate last year and are expecting even more this time around.”
Hnasko said St. Joseph Health, White Tiger Martial Arts and Y102 FM are among the Hesperia-based companies who will be manning booths at the Expo.
“Last year, St. Joseph’s led our participants in some heart-related activities and games that were really fun and enlightening,” said Hnasko. “They also brought along some nurses to check people’s blood pressure and I think they will be doing that again this year.”
Other activities planned for the Healthy Habits Expo are kickboxing demonstrations and Zumba instruction. Hnasko said there also will be local restaurants on hand who will give out samples of healthy foods.
“Another reason we decided to do this event is because a lot of RMS parents had expressed their concerns about their teens facing body pressure,” said Hnasko. “We want to inform teens about all the ways they can make positive lifestyle choices in order to have a fit and healthy body.
“Our main goal is to motivate and, in turn, help youngsters create lasting change.”
Along with promoting ways to maintain good health among its students and their parents, Hnasko said the Healthy Habits Expo also serves as kickoff for the school's upcoming second annual 5K Walk/Run and Health Fair on May 21. That event will begin at 7:30 a.m. and is open to the public. Fees to participate range from $5 to $25.
Sponsorship packages are also available for local businesses for $25, $75 and $125. They all will include a free booth at the Walk/Run, as well as other incentives.
Ranchero Middle School is at 17607 Ranchero Road, Hesperia.
