Last week, I had the pleasure of interviewing our new City Manager Nils Bentsen. I asked him if he could share some of his life with Hesperia and he agreed.
"I was with the (San Bernardino County) Sheriff's (Department) for 27 years and retired at the rank of Captain," Bentsen told me on Tuesday. "It's been a great challenge since I retired and then going to (City Hall) as City Manager."
I asked Bentsen about hobbies and what keeps him busy away from his work.
"Well, I love to go deer hunting and also gardening and yard work. It's very relaxing and probably seems boring because I'm so content doing that."
He also shared a bit of his background here in the Victor Valley and touched on his family life.
"I was raised in Hesperia, moving here in 1975. I attended Hesperia Christian School from fifth to 12th grade," he said. "That's also where I met my wife Paulette.
"We were married in 1985 and blessed with four children."
Bentsen has a son in the Navy who works in nuclear power on the USS Oklahoma City.
"One of our twin girls is married has a beautiful 8-month-old little boy and now we are grandparents," Bentsen said. "Our other twin graduated with a business degree from Cal State San Bernardino.
"Our youngest daughter attended Texas A&M on a volleyball scholarship."
Bentsen said he's happy to be in the Hesperia driver's seat and hopeful for the future.
"I'm deeply humbled since being select as City Manager," he said. "I want to do the best job possible. I love the city of Hesperia and all the people."
Hesperia, what a wonderful interview with Mr. Bentsen. He is a very humble person and kind and caring. How lucky we are to have him.
