Sister act sees niche for trendy clothes

Star Editor

When sisters Gladys Vargas and Laura Nava decided to open a retail store soon after moving to the High Desert, the decision on what to carry came fairly easily.

"We're into style," Vargas said.

Initially considering just carrying shoes, they decided to expand the idea to a one-stop shop. As a result, their dream, Stylin' Divas, recently celebrated its grand opening with a festive party at the store's I Avenue location.

Sporting stylish decor, the boutique carries shoes, accessories, including bracelets, necklaces and more, dresses, skirts, tops and more.

"Anything a woman would want, we sell," Vargas said. "We have what you can find in high end stores but not pay high end prizes."

And sizes range from junior to plus.

Owning their own store is a welcome change. Nava was a paralegal, and Vargas worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles.

"We got tired of working for people, so we put this together," Vargas said.

Vargas serves as the boutique's primary buyer.

"I just look for what's in style," she said. "I try to keep up with what's in fashion."

The sisters hope that by providing stylish clothing their patrons can feel even more special.

"We want everyone to feel like divas when they're here," Vargas said.

Stylin' Divas is located at 9594 I Ave., Suite A. The shop is open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sunday.
