School board says 'amen' to prayer at meetings

Board approves pre-meeting invocations

STAFF WRITER

Meetings of the Hesperia Unified School District school board will be starting a little differently soon.

In addition to the presentation of the flag by one of the district's Junior ROTC programs, which is followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, soon school board meetings will begin with an invocation -- a prayer by a local religious leader.

The board voted 4-1 to add invocations to their meetings at Monday night's school board meeting. Board member Chris Bentley voted against the measure, citing his concerns over the added legal risks created by adding prayer to the meetings.

Those offering prayers will have to sign a release indicating they will abide by certain rules. The main rule is laid out in the district's new Invocation Agreement: "Invocations shall not include a reference to any particular faith or belief, shall not denigrate any particular faith or belief, shall not contain any non-generic reference to God, and shall not promote one religion or set of beliefs over another."

"It's not sectarian," said board member Anthony Riley, who put the invocation on the agenda. "It follows every line [of the rules] in terms of non-sectarian government prayer."

As spelled out in the district's policy, that means there are a number of things that won't be heard in the invocations, so that the district won't be seen as preferring one religion over another. So the invocations will be somewhat generic, and won't have, as the policy reads in part, "references to a particular 'God' commonly identified or associated with one or more particular commonly recognized and organized religions, but not with all religions in general; and/or a reference to or a quotation from ... a Bible, scripture, treaties, history or religious writing identified or associated with one or more particular commonly recognized and organized religions, but not all religions in general."

The faithful are still free to offer such religion-specific sentiments during the public comment portion of school board meetings, however.

"There is risk here," said Bentley. "School districts are very different from counties and very different from cities in what it is we do."

"I don't see any risk," said board member Robert Kirk, who had first solicited a legal opinion on adding invocations to school board meetings in 2007. "A [government] agency has every right to do this. It goes back to our founding fathers: Thomas Jefferson talked about it when he was in the Virginia legislature."

"I grew up praying in schools," said board vice-president Lee Rogers. "What we came to this country for was freedom of religion."

The district will assemble a list of approved religious speakers and invite people listed to offer the invocations. Failure to comply with the district's rules will mean removal from the list.

The district's liability, said HUSD attorney Dennis Wagner, comes in if the board does not enforce its rules evenly. So long as each person giving the invocation is held to the rules -- and excluded if they don't -- the district won't be exposed to any potential suits, he said.

"If we were in another part of this country, this wouldn't even be discussed," said Rogers. "It'd just be done."

The next meeting of the HUSD school board will be held on July 13 at 6 p.m. in the HUSD Educational Support Center Annex, 15576 Main Street.

Mrs Hatfield was a campus aid at sultana. Or at least she was a couple of school years ago. Don't know why it matters though. Why is it HUSD's fault she died and how is it that they have demostrated they don't care?

Can't find any documentation to show this person was actually an employee with HUSD. What's going on here?

Why don't you all just quit and find a real job oh my mistake you cannot get a job nobody likes you. As for the rest of you get lost so we can have good honest people running the district, personally your all crooks and liars. You can't run anything your meetings are so boring its is sickning, Riley the parrot, Black cannot stay awake, and Rogers is so confused its funny to watch. The district fires so many people who don't deserve it if you fire McKinney that will be your biggest mistake, he is a good man but you treat him like dirt under your feet. the one you need top fire is the plant supervisor at Sultana he is the joke of the district. Why his is still working is beyond me he wants a whole Mexican crew, its raciest. And he has been written up sop many times but the district keeps ignoring it Why?

This conversation isn't about what a person wears it's about Bentley's behavior and judgment. Both are badly in need of improvement. He is not a good role model or example for the kids in Hesperia. If our kids dressed or behaved like he does they would find themselves unemployed and unemployable just like he is. Is that the future we want for our kids?

Yeah, LBO. As I said before Bentley has not made nor seconded a motion in at least 5 board meetings. Most of these items were staff recommendations. What's up with that? BTW he hasn't brought forth a single idea to benefit the kids or district. Only thing he's come up with is to recall another member. That's what he was elected to do?

If you attend board meetings on a regular basis you can see that Bentley is the biggest threat to HUSD not Kirk or Black or Riley etc. He has not once missed an opportunity to attack Kirk or the power of three. Even simple issues get the same response. Bentley starts with, 'i guess what i am thinking is blah blah blah and i can count to three so I know which way this is going to go' all the while giving some wild eyed stare at kirk.

I agree with really come on. It doesn't matter what we wear, just what kind of character we have. The whole suit thing, watch out for him.

Well, you do know that Bentley and Minton are working on the recall together. How's that for strange bedfellows. Of course that is not big surprize. Hum, what else is goin on?

Hey "come on". How about we put Bentley in a suit and call him a professional, maybe an attorney. That will make him a better man, right? Not.

Really? You've seen a photograph of Jesus? I don't believe the blogger mentioned anything about Bentley's hair other than to say it looked dirty. He does look dirty and dresses very inappropriately for an elected official and representative of the school district. Maybe shorts, raggedy tee shirts, and flip flops work for a stay at home dad but when he is out in public and representing HUSD he should clean up.

So what. Is it because Bentely has long hair? Jesus had long hair.

Hesperia voter, you don't have to be a Kirk supporter to understand that Bentley has a vendetta going on. In addition, Bentley's appearance is embarrassing to the district. He looks dirty and disheveled all the time. His actions at board meetings are particularly embarrassing. And before you accuse me of being a Kirkette I will say that I am not a supporter but I do think Kirk is not as much a threat to HUSD as Bentley is.

Sorry, I don't drink. But you have to be drinking the same stuff as Bentley if you want to spin the idea that he is promoting teamwork on the board.

Reality, I agree with you. I have seen the board meetings too. HUSD employee must drink heavily from the Kirk Kool Aid.

Hesperia Voter - Jun 29, 2009 07:34:56 PM Remove Comment

Oh please! I have been to the last 5 board meetings and Bentley has NOT made a single motion nor has he even seconded a motion and about half the time he votes against them. He has launched personal attacks against fellow board members at board meetings. So please don't try to spin teamwork!

Beau, can you also do a story on the current status of Mark Kirk? I'm curious what is going on.

teachertoo, I'm working on that story as we speak. So to speak.

Beau can you do an article on how many teachers were asked back so far. If it is only a handful the community should be aware that there class sizes are going to be huge next year. That impacts the community more than a little prayer at a meeting ever will.
