School board race explodes with candidates

Eight men now seek three open seats on board

Staff Writer

In a very busy week for the Hesperia Unified School District, six men entered the race for the three open seats on the school board.

Rusty Caldwell, Hal Heywood, David Holtz, Martin Hoover, Rick Maschek and Frank J. Valadez all pulled papers to run for board this week at the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters.

Edward O’Brien and Eric Swanson previously filed to run for the school board.

City council

The Hesperia City Council has nine candidates seeking three open seats: Armando Iniguez and Donald Parkman picked up papers this week from Hesperia City Hall.

Russ Blewett, Dennis R. De Hay, Bret Henry, William “Bill” Holland, David Holman, Thurston “Smitty” Smith” and Sean Wright all previously picked up the paperwork from Hesperia City Hall to run for city council. De Hay and Holman have turned in the required list of signatures.

Unlike candidates for the school and park boards, city council candidates must also turn in a verified list of 20 registered voters living in Hesperia, and the above list includes a mix of would-be candidates in all stages of the process.

Park board

No additional candidates declared their candidacy for the Hesperia Recreation and Park Board this week.

David Dupree and Rebekah Swanson had previously pulled papers to run for the park board.

The paperwork (including 20 signatures of registered voters living in Hesperia, for city council candidates) is due by Friday, August 6 at 5 p.m. Would-be candidates waiting to see if one of the incumbents drops out, however, might get an extra week: If any of the incumbents for any of the races does not file their candidacy papers, the deadline is extended for everyone in that race (except for that incumbent) to 5 p.m. on August 11.

Incumbents whose seats are in contention include Ed Pack, Smith and Rita Vogler on the Hesperia City Council, Hardy Black, Robert Kirk and Lee Rogers on the Hesperia Unified School District school board and Dave Dupree (who took over the seat of the late Richard Lupton), Mike Limbaugh and Swanson on the Hesperia Recreation and Park District board of directors.

Just wondering, you are right. Lining up a group like him is what it looks like. To LL parent, name is now attached. Where is yours. Also, I have read many posts about Minton on here not favorable. You must not have heard the stories. Not looking good here.

He may not have been arrested but he sure made a profit. Ask Bentley. As for the other board, they did the same to Freeman as this board did to Richardson but somehow that was okay with the ten posters. To say you would take a shady character. Wow. Interesting.

Hoover teaches our youth and works with them in the Little League program. I would call that a TRUE vested interest in the community and district!

Don't count on Caldwell to ever show up. He never showed up to babseball practice and he was a coach.

Hoover is a nice guy and a HHS product but he ran little league from his post at HHS as proctor, ask anyone who worked with him and could find him. He is just using the school board as a stepping stone in a political career. This is no secret to those who know him, taught him and have worked with him. Same thing Riley did so do we really want that? We need people who have a TRUE vested interest in our district. GREAT parents.

So are Hoover and Caldwell friends of Bentley? Is Bentley lining up puppets to be the new 'board majority'? Heaven help us!

Bob, Hoover took a teaching job at Encore, he has never been fired unlike many teachers from HUSD. He still runs the Little League program and it's very successful, despite what these uninformed cowards have posted.

Not very 'macho' there guys. Way to hide behind a stupid moniker. Put your real name down if you plan on slinging mud.

Yeah, Swanson is running. Can I get an AMEN? How was the district and board when he was on it? I would gladly take back Gogley, Swanson, Richardson, Minton, and Helen Rogers instead of what we have now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Swanson was never arrested for the charter school issue while Honeycutt was. Maybe, just maybe he didn't do anything?

I guess Hoover has time to run now. Heck, he made it easy when he failed to file the proper paperwork with little league for the all star boys. Yet again, Hoovers actions screw over kids and he thinks its no big deal and wants to walk away from it. All he had to do was follow the rules and do the work and YET AGAIN he can't even do that. Those all star boys got screwed by YOU.

No Hoover - Jul 30, 2010 06:29:55 PM Remove Comment

Hoover? He can't even run a little league. And Caldwell has no backbone. He constantly sat on the LL Board with Hoover and watched how Hoover, Gwen, and Gabby broke rule after rule after rule. Hoover, figure out how to run a little league before trying to take on a school district.

I agree with you macho. Also, Swanson ran before and lost and Bentley pointed out last time Swanson ran that he was involved with a school scandal. Yikes I say. Not what this district needs.
