Superintendent search on hold
Board to clarify superintendent's role before hiring Richardson's successor
The search to replace Hesperia Unified School District Superintendent Hank Richardson will not begin until the school board first clarifies the superintendent's role.
The HUSD school board tabled a motion to hire a firm to search for a new superintendent at Monday night's meeting.
"I think that [hiring a new superintendent] would add stability and direction" to the district, school board president Bruce Minton said. He had asked the motion be put on the evening's agenda at the board's previous meeting.
Board member Hardy Black said the board had other work to do before it could look for a new superintendent.
"I would like to hold off on it, myself," he said, noting the board had been working on clarifying the superintendent's goals and objectives for three months without reaching a satisfactory conclusion. "I think it would be a rush to judgment [to hire someone before the process was completed]. I would rather establish the goals ... prior to hiring someone to fit that mold."
The board approved Richardson's retirement August 7. Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Mark McKinney is currently serving as interim superintendent.
"I think we have an absolute duty as a board to seek direction for the district," Minton said.
Hiring a new superintendent quickly was "absolutely disastrous the last time it was done," Black replied.
Richardson had been named superintendent at the same time as Superintendent Dick Bray had announced he was leaving the district in August 2006, on the eve of the 2006-2007 school year.
In addition to letting the board have some time to continue working on setting the superintendent's goals and objectives -- the board is set to take up the matter again at its next meeting -- Black said he wanted McKinney to have some more time in his interim role.
"I'd like to see him there for a while and see what happens," he said. "I think we should wait sufficient time to allow Mr. McKinney to decide if he wants to participate in the [search for a new superintendent]."
Black's political allies supported him on clarifying the superintendent's role prior to beginning a search for a new chief executive to lead the Victor Valley's single largest employer.
"I think it's important to get some of these things nailed down before we ask someone to come in and consider us," board vice-president Robert Kirk said. "Then we can pull the trigger on this and move rapidly."
"I think we're jumping the gun if we do this right now," board member Lee Rogers said.
"It'll be months before we're prepared to do that," Minton disagreed, comparing the HUSD to a ship without a rudder. "It's been months and we have not been able to do that. ... We will continue to flounder."
The other three board members took strong exception to Minton's characterization of the district.
"In the last two to three weeks, many of the things we were given a mandate to do as a board have been going ahead at a rapid pace," Black said, referring to himself, Kirk and Rogers, who were elected together in November 2006.
But Minton stuck to his analogy.
"Principals need to know they have consistency, not for a few months, but as a long-term plan," he said. "This district has no rudder to guide it."
The next meeting of the Hesperia Unified School District school board will take place September 24, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at Sultana High School.

Mr. Roedell, the man who spoke during the public comment portion of Monday's school board meeting, brought in his comments as a letter to the editor this morning. I don't know if the Opinion page for next week has been laid out yet, so it may or may not appear in print for a week or more, but once it's typed in, it will appear on the Web site in the interim.

It is certainly possible that we will put recall-related stories on the front page in the CCA stories slot at some point. Once it becomes clear how far off the CCA trials will be, we'll revisit the issue in-house.

Beau, could we have a spot on the home page for all these related articles and information? There's a couple about other topics, but recall is consistently most popular, and all things recall deserve to be revisited, especially Mr. David Long's letter and your interview with him. Thanks

Beau, I really think it would be interesting to readers to find a copy of the statements made by the gentleman at the school board meeting. His statement was very professional, very articulate, and very pointed. Just like Dave Long's letter was printed back in June and was interesting to so many community members, I believe the statement made the other night would also cause quite a bit of discussion amongst the community. For those that weren't there, check out the minutes of the September 10th board meeting when they come out.

I didn't forget. It was a narrowly focused story, specifically updating the superintendent situation. Nothing sinister about it, although I certainly concede that others might have written a different story. Two other newspapers were also at the meeting Monday night, so his comments may well show up in their coverage.

What Beau "forgot" to say, is the man with the sign spoke. In a rousing, eloquent indigtment, a parent and teacher spoke to each of the board members and the HTA president, complimenting them for the few things they've done correctly and to each in turn, specifically questioning them on their own words and the message they are giving the public by their voting record. I can hardly wait for the transcript from this board meeting and am looking forward to this man writing his words on this and other forums. Too bad Beau ignored it.

How did this district ever become the largest emplyer in the high desert when our past leaders didn't even have a job description and had no goals a objectives. The three should just be honest an say the new goals and objectives for the new sup is to consult HTA leadership on every decision.

I'm hoping that the board will FINALLY figure our the goals and objectives in open public session. I was actually surprised to hear that the board gave the task of putting together their goals and objectives to the staff, when normally they are taking away staff's duties and trying to do them. I would like to see them put their goals and objectives as a priority.

behind closed doors? Cant they talk in public, or are they afraid that we will hear what there real intentions are? Its our rights as a community to know whats up and how our money is spent and who there taking it from. Look what happend in the Charter School thing is this whats going on with HUSD all secrets and lies? everyone is giving us a bible study lately not the truth, but being like this is not good for moral there hideing something and we want to know what.

do they have to talk about pulling guns and triggers? They just want all the control right now its only the thing to do they can control Mr, MC kinny with no problem. He is a perfect puppet for them while king Minton is running the show with Rogers they make it look so rich and hard while Rogers asked a man to come up with his sign and show he athority that was sick of her. The other board members should of stopped her but know they just laughed it off, it shows the community why we are askeing them to get lost and to have our own Union betray us like this is even more sad they are supposed to be for the people and for the workers not for a board who chooses to be nasty to them like that. Yes everyone has a say in this but to think she is fir the kids and for the comunity than do that while Minton watches and the others allow it thats wrong, they fight like babys over candy its our money not theres we have a right to choose where it goes too. THEY SHOULD RESPECT US ALSO AS A VOICE. Not shun us to silence.

| Stall as long as possible seems to be the plan here. Minton is right on this one. I was there, but had to leave before this was discussed. I wish I could have been there for that.
It's easier to manipulate the district when there is no clear leader to stand up to them. |

The only "disasterous" thing Hardy Black could be referring to with reference to the Superintendent is his decision to get rid of an effective, popular one. It's only a matter of time until the three to be recalled board members find a weak willed slug to do their bidding. Mr. McKinney is a great man, but they'll ruin his career if he'll let them.
