School board votes to shut down photo program

Kirk hopes to use savings to rescue elementary music, high school piano programs

Staff Writer

After two years in the red, the Hesperia Unified School District's photo department will be going dark.

"It does have a very significant impact on the general fund at a time that we are laying people off," Superintendent Mark McKinney said at the beginning of Monday night's meeting of the Hesperia Unified School District school board.

The district's two-year-old photo department was intended from the beginning as a moneymaker, but higher than expected expenses and lower than hoped for revenues have turned it into a money-loser instead.

"We are under tremendous stress and I believe you all know that," said board member Lee Rogers. The board just laid off 32 teachers earlier in May -- it was to be 33, before an additional teacher chose to retire. "In order to get through this crisis, there are bridges we have to cross and some of them are not pleasant bridges.

"We've operated in the red and continue to operate in the red."

"If we stopped today," Kirk said, the photo shop program "would cost us $1,255,742. ... It seems like this board has been put in the position of cleaning up messes."

The meeting, which was preceded by the district's annual ceremony honoring the year's retirees, featured audience members speaking out both in favor of an against the program.

"It takes three to five years to get a business going," Jean Campbell said. "Let's give it one more year. If it's still in the hole, cut it. But this is a program that needs a chance to succeed."

"It's absurd to keep photographs while you're laying off teachers," Chris Bentley said. "Teachers have more value to a school district ... than any photographer."

In the end, the HUSD school board voted 3-1 to terminate the program as speedily as possible. Board member Helen Rogers dissented and board member Bruce Minton was absent.

Board president Robert Kirk would like to use the money to save the district's elementary school music and high school piano programs, both of which are due to be terminated this year, due to layoffs, as well as hire four additional non-teacher slots that have been left vacant.

"The photo shop was down $1,255,742," in 22 months, Kirk said Tuesday. "Some have figured higher than that."

Shutting down the photo shop would mean at least a $442,000 annual savings, Kirk estimates, based on figures from the district.

"When we looked at what would it cost to [lay off] a teacher ... it's usually in the neighborhood of $55,000 per teacher," he said. "I never was in favor of getting into a business venture for profit. I believe those monies are given to us in a trust by taxpayers, and they ought to be used on our students."

The district does not yet have precise figures on how much money will be saved by shutting down the program -- the exact cost of shutting down the photo department is not yet known, as the lease on equipment will have to be broken, and other fees may have to be paid -- and district officials are cautioning that it's too soon to break out the champagne bottles.

Saving the music program would cost "around" $575,000, said Karen Kelly, the district's new assistant superintendent of personnel. And even if the elementary music program is saved, Surojeet Chatterji's high school piano classes may not be, as his situation is more complicated.

"We want him to come back," Kelly said. "It doesn't have anything to do with us not wanting him, because obviously with the way the parents and students talk about him, he is a gifted teacher, but there are some issues that need to be overcome for him to return to that position."

She could not give the full details of his situation, as personnel matters are private, but did say what it was not.

"It's not anything of a disciplinary nature or anything like that," Kelly said. "He didn't travel the normal path of becoming a teacher, and that poses challenges."

"Those five teachers I want to come back are music people," Kirk said. "Those are positions, not [specific] people."

The next meeting of the Hesperia Unified School District school board will be a special meeting on Tuesday, May 27, in the superintendent's conference room at the HUSD district office, 15576 Main Street.

The next regular meeting of the school board will be held on June 9 at the board's usual meeting place in the Education Support Center, 15576 Main Street.

I've already seen results from the photo shop closing. My kid's teacher was on the layoff list, and now she's been saved. Alright! She's much better than a photo any day.

Obi Wan, you're wrong about Mark McSkywalker. He's sold out to the Dark Side of the Force. Don't trust him.

Have you ever noticed that when Bentley speaks, programs die? Goodbye ExCEL. Guess you should have given Bentley the test so he could coach his kids. Goodbye Photo Dept. Maybe you didn't morph out the look of stupidity on Lee Rogers face. Watch out, when Bentley speaks, the 3 listen.

Hold on Whoa there. Mr. Pelayes did not make that statement at the April board meeting nor was the statement about Mr. Minton. If your child actually attended the board meeting he or she got it mixed up. Check out the video of the meeting!

Ok Bentley, how about the cafeteria? Are they not selling a product? Does every school have a business license? Are all the cafeteria breaking even or in the red? How many times has the district covered lunch and then not been repaid?

Please note that this special board meeting referred to is on Tuesday, May 27th at 3 pm. The arrangement of the meeting is switched around a bit, so Hearing from the Public is first thing. For those that want to be there, make sure you are there by 3 pm. Of course, many of us will still supposed to be working at that time, but come to this public meeting if you can.

I think Star Wars is a better analogy. Emperor Kirk, his minion Hardy Vader, and Ella the Hutt. Mark McSkywalker, George Solo, and Leia Yankaskas would make up the "rebellion". The main flaw here is that the real Vader had some good in him. That just leaves Bentley as that annoying, screeching character that hung out in Jabba's den.

Wow. I agree with Reality. Our district used to be held in high regard by others. The only reason others look at us now is to pity our situation and shake their heads at this board who is so full of hatred for the past they've done nothing but destroy the very things that others used to envy about us. How can they sit at a board meeting and tell our employee groups we must make cuts after they just had a meal at district expense? Why doesn't Bentley care about that? Maybe he gets a doggy bag during the break.

Pace has no morals or leadership. I know of a coach who was at Hesp Jr who was great with the kids, had the respect of the parents and was taking the program in the right direction. Pace wanted the coaching position so he went to Silverman and the coach who wasn't an HUSD employee was out the door. Price coached for one year and then abandoned the kids. The other coach would have stayed for years since his kids were going to be there. Pace looks out for Pace and the 3.

Ok, Bentley, since you are on the rant about illegal business. How about all the free child labor the district receives every year? Why not nit pick everything else to death.

As a teacher in the district, I am very envious of the classified union. They have REAL leadership. You would never see their leaders stand and applaud when teachers were losing their jobs. Jim Pace used to be a decent person. All the power seems to have gone to his head. Rather than getting rid of the photo shop, it would have been smarter to get rid of the so-called attorney, who is a total embarrassment and obviously has no knowledge of the law. Why would Kirk want to spend this kind of money on a total incompetent when his salary could be used to save many needed jobs in this district? Something smells fishy here.

Wow! I never thought of the Harry Potter stories as an allegory for HUSD! "Lee Rogers" Umbridge. Hardy the House elf. Voldekirk! Sad there's no Harry Potter to save us from those DeathEaters.

Here's the thing, though. The board is not interested in doing research. They're not really concerned with facts, other than the slanted "facts" Bentley gives them. Their only desire is to destroy all evidence that Richard Bray was ever here. Sad, since the man had some progressive and productive ideas. Just look at how the schools' test scores improved during his time as superintendent. Maybe HTA leadership had a problem with him, but I don't believe the teachers in general did. Scores don't go up when all of your teachers are unhappy. And believe me, there is no way that morale was ever lower in this district than it is right now. This used to be a proud district. Now we're a punchline.

The 3 have the power. All they had to do over six months ago was demand an audit to be done, demand the information to be turned over. Instead they sick Bentley on Landon who implies Landon has violated the law by not releasing public records. The current board is JUST AS MUCH to blame as Landon is for this not making money. For them to claim ignorance is insulting to the tax payers.

After watching the video of the meeting I find the attitude of the Board, with the exception of Helen Rogers, to be down right insulting. Lee Rogers claimed to ask about the photshop at her first board meeting. Over a year ago. Black claims the board asked three times for reports and never got them. Kirk claims to have asked for information almost a year ago. Maybe they should have serverd the taxpapers by making some effort. Blacks attitude was rude. As a board member you can't claim ignorance.

To Pro Photoshop, don't worry about LifeTouch. Administrators at school sites have been directed to seek their own photographers for their school pictures. Most of them won't go NEAR LifeTouch.
