Veteran school board member to attempt another run

Eleven would-be candidates have begun process of running for school, park board, city council

Staff Writer

A total of 11 candidates have begun the process of running for open seats on the Hesperia City Council, Hesperia Unified School District school board or the Hesperia Recreation and Park District board.

School board

Eric Swanson served five years on the school board (the election date was changed during his term to line up with other elections held in Hesperia) before coming in fourth in 2006 a race where only the top three finishers would win a seat on the school board. Friday, Swanson picked up the papers from the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters to begin the process of seeking a seat alongside the three who unseated him -- Robert Kirk, Hardy Black and Lee Rogers.

Hesperians Bruce Henson and Frank Rich also picked up papers to run for the school board. No further information about either man was available at press time.

They join Anthony Riley, who works for the San Bernardino County economic development department, as likely candidates for the available two seats. Incumbents Bruce Minton and Helen Rogers are not expected to run for reelection.

City council

Four men and one woman have also started the process for running for seats on the Hesperia City Council.

Planning Commissioner Paul Bosacki picked up papers to run for city council on Monday. Bosacki ran for city council in 2006, coming in fifth.

Rochelle Garner, who begun her campaign for the Hesperia City Council earlier this year on social networking Web site MySpace, picked up her papers on Tuesday.

They join the three men who picked up papers last week: Mayor Mike Leonard is seeking a second term. Former Hesperia planning commissioner Russ Blewett, who currently serves as the county planning commissioner for the 1st District, is also seeking a return to public life: He was formerly the mayor of Baldwin Park. Mark Kirk, the son of school board president Robert Kirk, also works for the County of San Bernardino, as the chief of staff of Supervisor Gary Ovitt. Incumbent councilman Tad Honeycutt has said he will not run for a third term.

Park board

Incumbents Bob Chandler and Jack Hamilton are the only people as of Friday afternoon currently looking for the two seats available on the Hesperia Recreation and Park Board.

Would-be city candidates must have their completed paperwork returned to the office of the Hesperia City Clerk (for city council candidates) or the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters (for school or park board candidates) by August 8 at 5 p.m. The deadline is extended until August 13 if one or more incumbents on a governing body choose not to run for re-election.

I can't believe Bentley's running against someone like Eric Swanson. If HTA supports him, the teachers should rise up and vote no confidence in Jim Pace.

No parents at the meeting to speak up? Then shame on them, because there seems to be A LOT of them here voicing their opinions. Unless most of you all are the few people using multiple aliases trying to start something.

I understand that there were no parents to speak up for the change in bus policy except for former school board member Eric Swanson. I believe he is a man of his word, and we need him back.

Eric, thank you for showing up last night for the bus meeting. It shows us that you, Bruce and Helen do care about our students and what the parents have to say.

Mr. Swanson's presence at the meeting at HHS was just one more example of his dedication, dignity, and concern for the CHILDREN of Hesperia. Come on Hesperia-pay attention to what is going on now!

We need to come together as a community and voice our feelings about the burden that the school district is placing on our students. My daughter will need to leave the house before 6 00 am to make it to school by 7 00 am. She will be walking for an hour in the dark during the winter to get to school. Our kids safety must come first. Tonight’s meeting is at Hesperia High School cafeteria at 6 30 pm. Make calls to any other parents that will be affected by this and get them to show up to the meeting.

I made it to the Bus meeting last night. Eric was at the meeting at Sultana last night. I did talk to him and he was very concerned about the student’s safety. He told me that Hesperia does not have the proper infrastructure to keep our kids safe with the new transportation policy enforcement.

There was a letter to the editor in the Daily Press regarding the bussing issue. Mr. Gerling assertions are correct, if the "trio" had not paid the buy outs to Mr. Richardson and Mr. Samuels, they would have to make the citizens pay for their ridiculous decisions by forcing their children to walk the extra distance, find alternative means, etc. It reminds me of the governor making the decision yesterday to lower state employees wages to minimum wage because the state legislators can't come up with a budget. In my opinion, the legislators should be the ones earning minimum wage, it is in fact part of their job description.

Eric Swanson was at the Bus meeting at Sultana tonight. I think he wanted to speak, but they only allowed questions. Maybe he will be at the Meeting for bussing at Hesperia High on Thursday evening, and they should let him speak!

I just back into town and read in the paper that Eric Swanson was running for school board. I was very pleased to see this. I will do what ever I can to help him get back on the school board. He did so much for the students in our district.

Lights, camera, action! The board video minutes are great but not a good place to see a person's true character. I'm sorry to say we have seen things away from board meetings that do prove that at least one of the board members isn't the same "good man" he is on camera.

What happens at a board meeting is public record. Anyone can view it and form their own opinions. The board meeting videos can be found and played from hesperia. org

Enough already with the personal bashing. Attend the board meetings and make your own judgments based on what you see and hear. People who write these nasty, personal blogs are no better than those they are trying to put down. Grow up.

He is no saint and never will be he has done some nasty things, but he does even worse things in the district. But he did catch the land thing that i can say was one just one good thing. But as for a human being he is a creep. I have known him for many years and he did some very bad things to my family but at least I do not have to look at him anymore ever. His judgment will come in the afterlife, TO BAD IT DID NOT TAKE HIM OUT SOONER, But I guess the lord wanted him more humility so he will have to stay a little longer like Hank . We all cannot get all our wishes at one time. Maybe Kirk will be nest in line they all wont live forever.

Just because someone acts one way in public, does't mean he the same way in private. Look at Mr. Minton, he acts polite to his wife in public. He's not such a good man in private. Just ask him yourself what I mean. How disappointing.

To say he is sorry for his comment and disrespect to the CSEA president for say that about the death of her mother in law in front of the board meeting and saying he will clear the room to everyone. In a public meeting, But he does not have the rights to do it that shows he has no respect for any woman or anyone in the district he owes everyone a apology for thinking he has the power to run over people like a train. He has no right to think he is a God and should have respect for every man and woman in the room. No matter what they have to say he does not rush the people he likes just her and the ones he does not like, and always will not answer Mr Roshelle's question about the signs, why does he have something to hide? He will answer every other question but the ones he chooses or The CSEA'S questions he will not I think he is rude and rash. HE NEVER REMINDS SOME OF THEM OF THERE TIME BUT THE ONES HE DOES NOT WANT TO HERE FROM THAT IS NOT FAIR.

Robert and Vicki Kirk have been very happily married for decades. Anyone who has spent any time with them has noticed the love, respect, and admiration they both genuinely have for one another. To state otherwise just shows your total ignorance of the subject. What a ridiculous statement hesperian.

stopthemadness - Jul 29, 2008 11:55:26 AM Remove Comment

Not everyone who is effective has a good public speaking style. Make no mistake, Kirk has done enough damage in 2 years by simply getting his own way, and he certainly expresses that well enough. His disrespect for his wife, on the other hand, is most telling of his lack of respect for women in general. Making tired jokes of how he'd like his wife to scrub on her knees and cook without the microwave, etc. I've found Hardy Black even more rude to women who work and do not only work domestically.
