Ex-principal: Board members driving away 'quality' people
When former Kingston Elementary School principal David Long told three members of the school board that they should resign if there was an attempted recall, he had no idea that, 60 seconds later, a recall attempt would be announced.
"No, I did not," he said Tuesday afternoon. "I knew that they were putting the recall papers together. Different people had [told that rumor] that to me. And I was told, you know, coming up. But I didn't know it was [going to be] staged that way."
Long was addressing the school board he believes are responsible for more than a dozen principals and other administrators leaving the district this year.
"I believe, absolutely, every one of them, [the board] was a factor in them leaving," he said. "Every one of them went to an equivalent or a promotion-type job. There were some seriously quality type people who were lost to the district last year."
In Long's case, he's going to be the principal of an elementary school in Logan, Utah.
"Speaking for myself, yes, I had thought for years about moving to this part of the country, but I don't know if I would have looked if conditions had been different."
He also submitted letters to the editor published in the Daily Press and Hesperia Star on the issue.
"The anxiety caused by this board made it very difficult to get the business of the district done," Long said. "People were down at the district office trying to do everything they could to please the new board ... and frankly, it made them very unavailable to people at the school sites.
"It could be something as simple as a purchase order," he said. "Sometimes a purchase order passes through two or three departments, and if people are off working on something that a board member has a personal interest in, it just slows things down."
Long said he expects the departures to continue.
"The dominos haven't stopped. That kind of turmoil continues. We're not talking about a few months of trying to get back on track as a district, now we're talking about a year or maybe more," he said. "You've had two things happen this past year that are major for any organization: You've had the staff and leadership at the main office completely change. And you've also had your governing leadership completely change."
The former principal, who resigned at the end of the 2006-2007 school year, said he has no issue with the new board majority making changes, simply how they're going about it.
"I believe you've always got things to work on ... but the spirit in which you approach that is critical, and it's been an attacking kind of spirit from the first moment this board took over. So instead of new people getting new direction and settling into that, the attacks have not ceased," Long said. "This is the first time the Hesperia district has experienced three seats changing all at the same time. The result of that is the instant ability to do, essentially, whatever they wanted, and they have done, rather than there being an opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and all the board members to find out what's going on. They've gone in with their initial assumptions and stayed there."
And contrary to board member contentions at Monday's school board meeting that their missteps have been due to a lack of support from district staff, Long says administrators and principals have done their best to work with the new board.
"I have seen little-to-no resistance from district staff. I have seen great efforts to build a relationship, to do whatever they've been asked to do. But the requests have just been unending and very difficult to meet."
As for the recall he predicted moments before it came about, Long doesn't know if it will succeed.
"If the recall focuses on what's happening to kids in our schools and what's happening with the tax dollars in our community, I think it's got a great chance at success. If it just focuses on 'we didn't like the way you did that' issues, I don't see it going anywhere."
And he sticks by his suggestion that the board members resign instead of waiting to be voted out in a special election.
"I don't want to see the community drug through that. Until the power struggle stops, the kids and the community are going to lose."

| people have to pay bills, take care of the dying and sick, look for a job, take care of the house and children and so forth, these are not excuses they are the facts because life does not stop any where. we the people have to try to make the time to be active in the things we do not want or approve of. We have to go to the meetings and have our voices heard and if we cannot go then send some one in the family or friend or even our children. We will not get any where picking at each other, just state what you believe is fact and every one else remember people have a right to thier opinion. We are the example to the future generation if we cannot show respect who will. |

| Dave Long, thank you for your integrity. It is tragic that we are losing great leaders as yourself because of the actions of three misguided board members. The recall cannot happen too soon! |

| Mr. Long is just stating what many informed people believe is true. Follow the money. Who supported these 3 new school board members? Why did the teachers' union feel they needed to be kissin cousins with the school board? The majority of the individuals who actively support the 3 new board members have not attended the board meetings. These party line people just go with the crowd. HTA site reps are rarely at the HUSD Board Meetings. I know, because I look for them! How can they factually communicate with their peers about district issues?
Free thinkers get first hand knowledge and question all aspects of the issues. Finally it comes down to making common sense decisions and having a stable school district to attract quality employees, not hit lists or political power plays.
Give me just the facts! |

| I'm sure you know JeB, but to the others who don't know, this is NOT a Mormon thing, it is a school board thing. Religion has absolutely nothing to do with the recall. |

| In response to the "To Jeb" person, do you have any idea at all as to what the "applacation" process is for HUSD? Or the procedure for screening, interviewing, and hiring "applacants"? Or are you just bitter because maybe somewhere, somehow, spelling and literacy both count? |

| To worried mom. Don't take all these comments as gospel, but do go to the board meetings. See what is happening for yourself. That is the best way for you to decide how you feel about what is happening. |

| Help, I don't know what to believe about this controversy. The title alone in this article scares the heck out of me. My kid has 5 more years to go in this district. What do I really need to know? Yes, I should have paid more attention prior to this. But someone please explain this to me better, parent to parent. I didn't find the recall site very helpful. Thank you |

it is the total truth about trying to get a job. I applied for a job and I actually had more qualifications than some other people. Guess what the people that had less are getting the interview's. I guess some time's having a degree doesn't work |

| Kirk is not Mormon. Only Black, Minton, and Rogers. But that is beside the fact. This is not about religion. Its about what Black, Lee Rogers and Kirk are doing to our children's education. It's never been a religious thing or a mormon thing, its whats right is right and whats wrong is wrong, and they are making the wrong choices for the children now and in the future. Their acts will effect our district for a long time! |

| Up until this year, since last November we had a school district of which we could be proud. Now the wrong headed behavior of Kirk, Black, and Rogers are repeatedly eliminating great programs. We don't want to change our calendar, and we don't want to close 6th grade schools! Resign or revote! |

| The Mormon church has nothing to do with it. I am Mormon, I've known Helen Rogers, Bruce Minton, and Hardy Black for years. I grew up in Hesperia and I would love to have a district job so I didn't have to drive down the hill. They have not come to my aid. Dave Long is Mormon and so are a lot of the recall people. Explain that? |

| sorry to bust your bubble but harty black and bruce minton and kirk and rogers are mormons there are more than you think plus there are more in the district that are friends inside the DISTRICT OFFICE working for hank richerdson doing what ever he wants him too there all friends you dont know what is going on we do there are many of us who are the eyes and ears of the school district that see everything but never talk but just watch them dod waht they do until now its not fair we just cant stand by and watch them get away with ity anymore they hold the taxpayers at bay and spend money at there will and give good decent people no chance to get jobs unless they know someone and have qualifacation they deserve the chance to get jobs but the applacations go right in the trash without even a interview but un qualified friends of theres get the jobs that is not fair everyone deserves a chance no matter what I have seen thieves and crimanals with rights to the positios get it before the interviews even begin they already have the person picked that is so wrong so why even post the job if they know who they want to make it look official what a scam Hank Richerdson has so many grudges its not even funny so he just over looks people because he does not like someone so he laughs at them and makes the person miserable and they cant move up the board do the same do es everyone think that is fair I dont he needs to be put out so others have chance to get good jobs and have the chance to be fairly treated if these people were such good people than why do they do such bad things. |
